BRAILLE
Braille is a system of raised dots which can be used by blind people to read and write by touch. Each braille character is formed from any combination of up to six dots. In this way all letters, numbers and punctuation can be shown in braille. This basic braille code is known as 'uncontracted' braille. Most people who read and write braille use 'contracted' braille, where some of the braille characters stand for groups of letters or whole words. There are also braille codes for maths, science and music, and each language has its own code - and all this just from six dots!
The Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind offers classes in Braille and Moon to complete beginners and to those who wish to improve their skills. Our Braille teaching is based on the 'Fingerprint' course, published by RNIB. The books used for teaching Moon are 'Journey Round the Moon' and 'Moon Journey', both published by RNIB. Students may learn as little or as much as they want to, and each person learns at their own pace. Our tutors are experienced Braille and Moon users. The classes are held during school term time in our Bradbury Activity Centre, Norwich, on Thursday mornings and afternoons. We can lend our students the textbooks and tapes, as well as Perkins Braillers.
MOON
Moon is a method of reading by touch which is different from Braille. Moon characters are shapes, formed by combinations of straight lines, hooks and curves. The characters are larger than Braille, so are easier to feel. Many of the characters are the same as, or similar to, printed letters, which makes them easy to recognise and remember. All letters, numbers and punctuation can be shown in Moon. Some special Moon characters stand for groups of letters or whole words.
